Is hard water leaving your car with ugly stains? It is so irritating, as such stubborn streaks just appear impossible to remove. Well, not anymore. The trick lies in addressing the problem the very moment it starts so your car remains spotless and bright. Let's take you through the steps of removing those hard water stains from your car with ease.
What You'll Need for Cleaning Hard Water Stains:
- White vinegar: This will help in dissolving mineral deposits from hard water stains.
- Water (distilled or bottled): Use really pure water so that no minerals are added, further discoloring the area being cleaned.
- Spray bottle: This is to easily spray the cleaning solution onto the affected area.
- 100% cotton towel or Ultimate Foam Applicator Pad: These soft and absorbent materials are needed to wipe off the hard water spots without scratching the car's surface.
- nextzett Ultra Terry Microfiber Towel: A high-quality, lint-free towel designed for streak-free drying and polishing.
- nextzett No. 2 One Step Polish: A versatile polish that cleans, restores, and protects the paintwork in a single step.
- nexttzett No. 3 Polish & Wax or nextzett SF3 Premium Protect: A high-performance product that creates a long-lasting protective layer, safeguarding against water stains and contaminants.
Time is of the essence. Removing the stains immediately after they occur is going to be a lot easier than trying to remove them after they've been allowed to sit in the hot sun for hours or days.
The problem with hard water is that it has minerals that etch into the surface of your car's paint finish making it hard to remove with a simple wash.
Solution to Hard Water Spots
Step 1: Washing and Drying Your Car Correctly
Wash the car thoroughly. This will remove road grime and dust from your car. It will also help to use distilled or bottled water to eliminate some of the minerals responsible for the hard water stains. As always, wash in a shaded location—never in direct sunlight. While the products we are going to use are completely safe, heat from a hot surface or direct sunlight can turn something harmless, like car soap, into an amplified cleaner, which can yield unknown results. Now dry the car completely. Read how to correctly wash and dry your car.
Step 2: Vinegar Solution to Break Down Hard Water Stains
Mix 1 part regular white vinegar with 1 part distilled water (soft water is good too). It's better not to use regular tap water, which contains minerals. Apply the vinegar/water solution with a spray bottle onto the affected paint finish. Allow mixture to work for up to 10 minutes. The acid in the vinegar will help loosen the hard water minerals embedded in the paint. So, while vinegar is completely safe to use on your car's surface, use a 100% cotton towel or a Nextzett Ultra Terry Microfiber Towel to avoid water stains.
After allowing it to work for 10 minutes, wash and dry the car again to remove the water/vinegar solution. The minerals from the hard water will be gone at this point, but you may still notice the rings. If so, go on to the next step.
Step 3: Polishing Your Car
Polish the surface with Nextzett No. 2 One Step Polish using a foam applicator pad or microfiber towel (do not use bulk towels, rags, cloth diapers, or flannel). Better yet, apply with a Dual Action Orbital machine (Porter Cable and Rupes both make quality DA polishers) using a polishing pad and setting on medium.
After polishing the surface, buff off the area with a microfiber towel. Repeat the process if necessary. Several passes might be required to completely remove hard water stains from your car.
Step 4: Prevent Future Hard Water Stains
Nextzett No. 2 One Step Polish has special abrasives that reduce the appearance of the etch marks left by hard water. It can also remove unsightly swirl marks from your paint. After application, not only remove hard water stains, but your paint will look like it did the day you bought the car.
Summary
The key to removing hard water spots is not to let them stand too long, especially in the hot summer months. With a coating of Polish & Wax or, better yet, Premium Protect on your paint finish, you'll buy yourself some time to wash the hard water away as soon as possible.
We also recommend carrying a bottle of quick detailer, such as Nextzett Perfect Shine, and a Nextzett Microfiber Towel, with you in your car in case you find it's been attacked by rogue sprinklers or even bird droppings. A simple spray and wipe-down will take care of the issue immediately before it becomes a problem.
